The intervention in the Bolhão Market is once again in the spotlight. The project is one of the finalists in the 4th edition of the European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention, an initiative that "recognizes quality interventions in all aspects of building heritage and contribute to their promotion."
The organization emphasizes how "the protection of the building as a 'monument of public interest' recognizes the heritage value of The Bolhão Market in two inseparable dimensions: the artistic uniqueness of the structure and its functionality as a traditional market."
The jury selected Nuno Valentim's project because "this transformative action, attentive to the existing heritage, aims to enhance the identity and coherence of the building, eliminating extraneous elements and managing new infrastructures without losing its most important values - the vendors, users, and the activity of the fresh produce market."
The Bolhão Market is competing in the "Built Heritage" category alongside 15 other projects from Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Portugal. These projects were selected by architects Dikkie Scipio, Susana Valbuena, and Kimmo Lintula from a total of 174 applicants.
The European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention will also recognize the best European project in the "Exterior Spaces" area.
The winners of the event, organized in partnership with the Association of Architects of Catalonia, will be announced on June 1st in Barcelona.
The rehabilitation project of The Bolhão Market has already been recognized on other occasions, most recently at the Portugal Real Estate Exhibition, as well as the Construir Awards 2022.
Currently, it’s nominated for the 2023 National Urban Rehabilitation Award by Vida Imobiliária, the 2023 FAD Architecture and Interior Design Award, and the EUPrize (AADIPA) in Barcelona.
The F.016 shading system by Extrusal is one of the elements that characterize the renovation project of this iconic structure in the city of Porto.
